Marakele NP, South Africa
Country: South Africa
Site: Marakele National Park
Website(s): http://www.sanparks.org/parks/marakele/
Contact Name:
Phone: +27 (0)14 777 1745
Email: tinuss@sanparks.org
Address:
Description: Involves a partnership to develop the national park, including land purchase. This is covered in an agreement with SANParks.
Comments: "In a five year period, approx. 15,000 hectares was purchased and consolidated into a partially complete / fragmented protected area, 5000km of fencing removed, a couple of hundred km. of power lines removed, farmsteads bulldozed, several thousand head of game restocked, and the first of three 5-star lodges developed (through another PPP with a private lodge operator). The entire area is managed as a unit, and interestingly, SANParks have a call option on the land (at its purchase price, fixed in real terms) – this already has a potential value added of $20 m to SANParks if they were to exercise the option today. The private partner has certain responsibilities on the land and the lodges are a cash machine for the entire park."
